Tenali Raman Stories # 8 - Tenali Rama and the Sadhu

These were the days when the King Krishnadava Raja ruled Vijay Nagar, a self proclaimed Sage came to the town. He mesmerized all the citizens of the town with his magical triumphs.
Every morning and evening people would gather at the temple with specially prepared delicacies as offerings to the Sadhu.

The news also reached the royal court. When Tenali Raman heard of this, he smelt a rat. He went to the temple and sat near the Sadhu. The Sadhu began reciting shlokas. The Sadhu went on repeating the same shloka over and over again.

Tenali Raman realized that he was a fraud. Tenali Rama intended to teach the fraud sadhu a lesson and also did not want to hurt the sentiments of his people. Thoughtfully, he leaned forward and plucked a strand of hair from the Sadhu’s beard.

“I have the key to Heaven!” he shouted triumphantly.

The villagers looked startled. The villagers looked startled.

“This Sadhu is so great that if I keep the hair from his beard with me, I will be blessed forever!” said Tenali Raman.

Immediately there was a scramble as everybody rushed to get hold of a hair from the Sadhu’s beard. The frightened Sadhu ran for his life and was never heard of again.
